ABSTRACT
In this study, the S-coda wave quality factor (Qc) was calculated for Çanakkale-Ayvacık region by using the single back-scattering model. An earthquake sequence occurred after the main shock with Mw=5.3 on 06.02.2017 03.51 (GMT). Within the scope of this study, local magnitudes with greater than 3.5 that were occurred before and after the earthquake sequence were analyzed and vertical components of EZN station records operated by Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring Center (KOERI-RETMC) were used. The frequency dependent coda wave attenuation formula is expressed with Qc(f)=Q0fn where Q0 is the quality factor at 1 Hz and n is the frequency-dependent parameter. The attenuation of coda-wave amplitude was determined by applying 7 bandpass filters with 1.5, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24 Hz central frequencies for 6 lapse time windows with the interval of 5 second ranging from 20 to 45 second. It was derived different Qc functions for all lapse times in the analysis of before and after the main shock. For the pre-main shock, Qo and n parameters varies with 93-153 and 0.65-0.74, respectively where for post-main shock 81-140 and 0.71-0.81. The frequency-dependent Qc variation is estimated as Qc(f)=21.5f 1.22 for pre-main shock and Qc(f)=13f1.46 for postmain shock. It is concluded that Qc shows temporal variation and increase in frequencydependent factor after the main shock and also a decrease in Q0 in the region. These results reveal the effect of seismic wave attenuation on the newly formed fractural systems. Furthermore the results obtained are in consistent with seismically active tectonic zones.
